Close Calendar

What is a close calendar?

A close calendar (also called a close schedule or close timeline) is the structured, date-driven plan of every task that must be completed during the financial close cycle — specifying what needs to happen, who is responsible, and when it must be done relative to period end. It is the operational execution plan that turns a close checklist into a managed timeline.

Where a close checklist defines what needs to happen, a close calendar defines when it needs to happen and who is doing it — making it possible to identify dependencies, manage bottlenecks, and confirm the close is on track in real time.

What a close calendar includes

Task name. The specific activity — bank reconciliation, AP subledger reconciliation, accruals posting, intercompany confirmation, balance sheet sign-off.

Owner. The individual or team responsible for completing the task.

Due date. The target date for task completion, expressed as a number of business days after period end (e.g., T+1, T+3, T+5).

Dependencies. Tasks that must be completed before this task can begin — intercompany confirmations must be agreed before eliminations can be posted.

Status. Real-time tracking of whether each task is not started, in progress, complete, or blocked.

Why the close calendar matters

A close calendar makes the close manageable and visible. Finance leadership can see at any point during the close which tasks are on track and which are at risk. Teams know their deadlines without needing to ask. Bottlenecks are visible before they cause delays rather than after.

For continuous close operating models, the close calendar extends across the month — not just the post-period close window — tracking reconciliation activities that happen throughout the period.
