What is multi-entity reconciliation?

Multi-entity reconciliation is the process of reconciling financial records across multiple legal entities within a corporate group — confirming that each entity's books are accurate individually, that intercompany balances between entities agree, and that the group's consolidated position is correct.

It combines standard account reconciliation work at the entity level with the additional complexity of intercompany matching, currency translation, and cross-entity policy consistency.

Why it matters

‍

As businesses grow through subsidiaries, acquisitions, or international expansion, their finance close process must scale to handle data from multiple ERPs, multiple currencies, and multiple regulatory frameworks. A discrepancy that is small at entity level can become significant at group level — particularly when intercompany eliminations amplify mismatches.

What multi-entity reconciliation covers

Intra-entity reconciliation. Each entity reconciles its own accounts — bank, AR, AP, subledgers — independently before group close begins.

Intercompany balance confirmation. Entities with transactions between them confirm that the corresponding receivable and payable balances agree.

‍

Currency translation review. Foreign currency balances are translated at the correct rates.

‍

Policy alignment. Where entities use different accounting policies, adjustments are made to align to group standards before aggregation.

Elimination review. Intercompany revenue, costs, and balances are eliminated. Any elimination differences are investigated.
