Treasury Reconciliation

What is treasury reconciliation?

Treasury reconciliation is the process of matching the cash, investment, and debt positions recorded in a treasury management system (TMS) or banking platform against the balances in the general ledger. The goal is to ensure that what the treasury team believes the company holds in cash and liquid assets agrees with what is reported in the financial statements.

It is part of the broader bank and balance sheet reconciliation process, but with additional complexity arising from the range of instruments involved: bank accounts across multiple currencies and entities, short-term investments, foreign exchange positions, intercompany loans, and derivative contracts.

Why it matters

Treasury is the custodian of a company's most liquid and sensitive assets. Errors in treasury reconciliation can mean cash balances in financial statements don't reflect actual available funds, intercompany loan balances don't agree between entities, or FX positions are not correctly marked to market. Any of these create exposure — both financially and in terms of the controls environment that auditors and boards expect.

The reconciliation challenge

Treasury reconciliation is complicated by the number of counterparties involved (multiple banks, multiple investment counterparties), the frequency of transactions, and the diversity of data formats — bank statements arrive in different formats, TMS exports have different schemas, and the GL may not reflect real-time positions.

Automated treasury reconciliation platforms address this by normalising data from multiple sources, applying matching rules across instrument types, and producing a daily reconciled view of the company's cash and liquidity position.
